For the past four years Matthew Morrison has starred as choir director Will Schuester on Fox’s hit show Glee. While the show has made him a household name, Morrison fondly likes to say, “At the end of the day, I’m a song and dance man.”

To prove it, he’s recorded his sophomore album, Where It All Began, which features standards and classic Broadway tunes, including “Send in the Clowns,” “Ease on Down the Road” with Smokey Robinson and “On the Street Where You Live,” the song Morrison said he has sung at every audition, including Glee. The project marks the first from 222 Records, a newly formed label by Adam Levine and the last from producer Phil Ramone, who died in March.

The title of the album is apropos. The 34-year-old California native’s big break came when he made his Broadway debut in Footloose and went on to star inHairspray and The Light in the Piazza as Fabrizio Naccarelli. That role earned him a Tony nomination for best featured actor in a musical.

With Glee being referred to as the “gayest show on TV,” much has been written about Morrison’s sexuality. But make no mistake: Morrison, with his boy-next-door smile, curly hair and chiseled abs, is not gay. He’s used to the gossip, though. After all, he’s been singing and dancing since he was in the fifth grade and says he’s heard it all.

Dustin Fitzharris: You have said in the past that the biggest misconception about you is that you’re gay.

Matthew Morrison: It’s never really been a misconception for me.

Fitzharris: But for the media it is. Does it ever bother you?

Morrison: I know my own truth. I’m in a great relationship with a woman. Maybe before it used to bother me. Then I was like, “This is so stupid that this bothers me. Some of my best friends in the world are gay, and if this is bothering me, then that means I have an issue with that.” Once I figured that out for myself, I thought, “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me.” That’s why I think I’ve become an ally for the gay and lesbian community. I just got [an Ally for Equality Award] the other day in Atlanta. I’ve very proud of my role in the community. So say what you will.

Fitzharris: You mentioned that you’re in a relationship. Tell us about Rene Puente. Is she the one?

Morrison: Yes, she’s the one.

Fitzharris: What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for her?

Morrison: Wow. Hard to pick just one thing. We are really both into horses. Every new city or place we go, we always try to find a place to go horseback riding. One time in particular, after our horseback riding, we went along this beach in Hawaii. I set up this nice little picnic. We just had a beautiful day surrounded by the things we love: nature and each other.

Fitzharris: Everyone reading this is going to wonder how they can find a guy like you.

Morrison: They are not out there. I’m just crazy!

Fitzharris: Your new album is calledWhere It All Began. What is your fondest memory of working on this project?

Morrison: Two different things, but I’ll put them together. Working with Phil Ramone, who was just an incredible genius. We lost him too soon. The other was having Smokey Robinson sing on the album. They are just two great legends in their field. The three of us in the studio together was one of the coolest days I’ve ever had.

Fitzharris: This album takes you back to your roots and your love for theater. Your favorite musical is Assassins, but what was the first musical you ever saw?

Morrison: Miss Saigon. I loved it. I was like, “How do they do the helicopter thing?” I fell in love with the love story. It was so beautifully staged. I love the story between these two people who shouldn’t be in the same world together and shouldn’t be feeling how they felt for each other because it was wrong.

Fitzharris: You have been singing and dancing since you were a kid. What did your mother, who was an RN, and your father, a midwife, think of their son being in the arts?

Morrison: Well, my mom was definitely all for it. The thing about it is I was really active in sports. I rode that line between arts and athletics. It never became an issue at all until I had to go to college, and I said I was going to go for musical theater. Then it was, “Oh, so now we’ve really got to start paying for that!” I think that’s when it became like, “Are you sure?”

Fitzharris: Were you ever bullied because you were involved in the arts?

Morrison: No, I was the ally. I was the one who was always sticking up for others. I can throw a football further than probably a lot of the jocks. I was lucky, I feel, in that sense that I didn’t get bullied.

Fitzharris: What advice would you give to others who are bullied because their interests don’t fit in with what is considered typical?

Morrison: I want to say it’s like the organization, It Gets Better. I really does. Those are some of the hardest years. The only reason you are getting bullied is because those people who are bullying you are so insecure in themselves. Of course it hurts and makes you feel awful, but these people aren’t your friends. They aren’t the people you want to associate yourself with. Unfortunately in a high school setting, you have to be clumped in the same classroom with each other, so it’s kind of hard to get away from that. But once you’re out of that, you’re on your own. You make your own life. If you can make it through that, it really does get better.

Fitzharris: Glee has been renewed for two more seasons. Over the years it has tackled bullying, coming out and many other social issues. There are critics and fans, however, who have said that the show hasn’t maintained its greatness. How do you feel the show has held up since it began four years ago?

Morrison: I think as with any show, it ebbs and flows. The first two seasons were the height of the show. I feel those were the strongest seasons. I feel like the third season, for me, was like they weren’t sure what they were going to do. I think they gave everyone’s age away too early on, so they had to eventually graduate them. But I think what they did with the show by moving half of it to New York City was so smart. I think we were getting confined in the high school walls. I feel like that’s going to give the show a little more room to grow.

Fitzharris: After everything you’ve done, what are you the most proud of?

Morrison: The Light in the Piazza. It was the most challenging thing I ever had to do. I had to speak half the show in Italian and the other half in broken English. It was something I was really scared of, but when I came on the other side of that and got through my fears, I’ve never been so in command of a character and felt so invested. It really was a testament to the saying that hard work does pay off.

MATTHEW MORRISON, HONESTLY
With his new album of standards, the actor returns to his first love,...

MATTHEW MORRISON, HONESTLY

With his new album of standards, the actor returns to his first love, the stage

BY DARYL CHEN
PHOTOGRAPHED BY HIRO SEO
STYLED BY PAUL FREDERICK

School’s out for much of the country, to the great joy of students and—let us not forget—their teachers. Among the newly-freed faculty is Will Schuester, one-time Spanish instructor and glee club mentor at McKinley High, and a character on Fox’s Glee. Schuester is played by actor Matthew Morrison, who has chosen to spend his hard-earned hiatus…at work.

But that’s not how Morrison—who’s right now on the road supportingWhere It All Began, his new album of standards and songs from musicals—sees it. Instead, what he’s doing is a labor of love. While many people know Morrison from the small screen, he got his start on Broadway inHairspray, followed by leading roles in Light in the Piazza and South Pacific. “I made this album for my theater fans, because I feel like I’ve neglected them for the past four years, ” Morrison said in a recent interview with DuJour, “and I wanted to give them something.”

In terms of his album, that “something” features his revamped versions of “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “Send in the Clowns,” a medley from West Side Story, “Ease on Down the Road” (done as a duet with Smokey Robinson) and other favorites. Morrison’s recent live shows are a mix of song and dance, kind of like what his idol Gene Kelly used to do. “From a young age, I looked up to him and aspired to be like him,” Morrison said. “I don’t think there are many people that do that anymore.”

Until now. DuJour chatted with Morrison, who opened up—quite honestly—about the future of Glee, LGBT equality, his own relationship and having the chance to be the show-and-dance man he’s always wanted to be. Read the interview below, and catch him on the road or watch him in a PBS special airing this month.

Your album is the first release from 222 Records, Adam Levine’s label. How did that happen?

It was the easiest thing. I’ve been in L.A. for four years now and Adam lives there, and we’ve become friendly over time. We got to talking one day since he has such an affinity for this style of music.

Really? Mr. “Moves Like Jagger” likes show tunes?

I know; you wouldn’t think it. He’s a pop rock guy, but he’s actually recorded a few standards himself. When I told him I’ve always wanted to make an album like this, he said, “Well, let’s make it.” He’s been so amazing because he’s an artist, and he knows how artists should be treated. He was really kind of hands off in letting me do my own process. It’s been a ball. He checked in a few times and loved everything he’s heard.

Was it daunting at all to take on songs like “Lady and the Tramp” that have been covered by legendary vocalists like Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald?

Not really. These are well-worn classic songs that have been done by some of the greatest vocalists of all time, including Frank. I feel like every now and then there has to be an artist who comes along and kicks the classic bones of these songs and drapes their own tapestry over them. That’s what I tried to do with these songs. And, to be perfectly honest, I love Frank Sinatra and listen to all his stuff, but I tried not to listen too closely when I was going to the studio and doing it myself. I’ve changed a lot of the songs. I wanted to stick to the classic-ness of them; I didn’t want to stray too far from that but a lot of the stuff I’ve sped up and made it a little more dance-y.

Why?

Because a big part of my show is the dance aspect so it was important to me to get that feel in some of these songs. “On the Street Where You Live” is typically a ballad, and it’s one of my favorites to perform because there’s a nice dance break in there. I feel like the quicker pace just makes it move and I love it.

What’s your favorite track on the album?

Probably “On the Street Where You Live.”

Was there stuff you wanted to put on it but had to leave it off because of space and time constraints?

The way this album started going, it leaned toward the older stuff. There’s a lot of current stuff that I really would have loved to do. You know, like “Miss Saigon,” even “Les Mis” or something like that. I felt where this album was heading, it had a kind of Rat Pack-y feel, and I wanted to keep it specific to that genre.

You’ve been touring to promote your album. You’ve also performed on Broadway for years. What is it like going to work when your job is to perform live? Do you get nervous?

Honestly, it’s probably the same thing as you going to work every day. When you first start your job, you’re probably a little nervous because it’s a new atmosphere and you don’t know what to expect and you’re meeting new people. I feel like it’s the same thing with a show. When it first goes up, there are nerves and not knowing what to expect and trying to work the audience into where the joke lands. You need to pick your moments. Then, as you get into your 50th show, your 100th show, your nerves go away and it becomes your day-to-day life.

But in an office job, you can phone it on days if you feel like it. On stage, you can’t do that.

Well, I’ve seen some performances that were phoning it in. [Laughs] I’m not saying that I would ever, but I have definitely seen it. Instead I feel like you have to pace yourself. Especially on days [when you have to two performances] because if you give everything you have in that matinee, you won’t have anything left for that evening show.

In your current show, you perform only songs from your new album, so it’s all standards and Broadway songs. Are you worried that some of your Glee fans will see you and be disappointed that you don’t do something like “Golddigger”?

No. One of the great things about the last four years on Glee is that I got to perform some spectacular show tunes. These were specifically written for the theater, and we performed them on global television and hopefully that has opened up that world to people. Hopefully, a new audience will gravitate towards this music.

Speaking of Glee, how much longer are you committed to doing it?

We just got picked up for two more seasons. I was surprised we got picked up for two in a row. That will take us to year six, and after that I don’t know; I have no idea.

In this season’s finale, I was so pleased to see your character, Will, finally marry Emma.

I know. It seems like this prolonged joke that they were going to keep playing on the audience. We almost had that moment earlier in this season and then she ran away, and I feel like we’ve been hinting at it since the show started. For me and Jayma [Mays], who plays Emma, we were just like “Ah, it’s about time.” We were really excited.

What happened with your role this season? Mr. Schuester disappeared for a while because he went off to Washington to be on a panel. Was that because you were working on another project?

To be perfectly honest, I think they had so many characters with all the new kids and [Rachel and Kurt in] New York City. I feel like they did that so they can really focus on that group. I mean, there are so many people on that show.

What’s it been like having all those new characters on the show?

It’s been good. I don’t think it will ever be like it was with the original crew, because we came up together, we went through the craziness of this show together as a family, and we’ll always have that bond. The great thing is, I’ve gotten used to hearing the same voices so hearing new voices and new talent, I was like, ” Oh, wow.” A lot of times, you’re in a scene with someone and you kind of know what you’re going to get because you’ve been in a scene a million times with that person. It was fun to be genuinely surprised and reacting honestly, because I honestly didn’t know what these kids were going to bring. It was refreshing.

Is there any song you’d like to do on Glee that you haven’t done yet?

I don’t know. I would say a Stevie Wonder song, but we just did a Stevie Wonder episode. I got to do some Coldplay, which is one of my favorite bands. I honestly thought I could have quit Glee after I did the Fred Astaire number where I danced on the ceiling. That was an “it’s not going to get any better than this” feeling. To date, we’ve done 548 songs on that show. I’m having a hard time thinking of a song we haven’t done.

When it comes to performing live, what are your pre-show rituals?

I have one that I can’t really talk about. And I just drink a lot of Throat Coat tea. Before a show, I like to be hydrated. I’ll probably have four or five cups.

When you’re on stage, do you try to look at one person in the audience and sing to them?

I try to. Each song is a different story to me. The great thing about this music in particular is that it allows for so much acting. I take each song as a monologue, and I try to act through it. I will connect with certain people, but the connection is a way of telling the story for me. In my dance sections, I like to have a little fun and be free. If I’m playing with the symphony, I will have a structured set list, but if I’m playing with my five-piece band, I like to not have set list and go with depending on what the crowd is feeling.

You’ve been performing with a symphony orchestra. How’s that?

I love those days because there’s nothing better than standing in front of a 60-piece orchestra and delivering a song. I feel like the general of an army.

I read that part of the proceeds from your album are going to support LGBT equality.

It’s something that comes from my theater days. and I’ve also had incredibly amazing gay and lesbian friends. It’s a human rights issue. I feel like they should have the same human rights that we have as straight people. I see no reason why, if you’re in a loving committed relationship, you shouldn’t be able to marry the person that you love. It doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve been trying to do a lot of work with the HRC [Human Rights Campaign], and I recently got the “Ally of the Year award.” It’s a cause that I love and that I love fighting for. I think we need more straight allies.

What do you mean?

When I was accepting my award in Atlanta about a month ago, there were these two brothers. The younger brother was gay, and the older brother was straight and married. Just hearing the older brother talk about his gay younger brother was so beautiful. He was getting choked up and saying how it’s wrong he can’t have the same rights that he has, and it was just a beautiful thing. I know a lot of straight friends who feel that way. I wish they would be more vocal about it.

Some article I read about you online referred to you as “the gayest straight man” they knew. How does that make you feel?

It doesn’t bother me. I think it used to get under my skin when I was younger. But I have so many gay friends whom I love, and I need to support them in any way I can. If that word is thrown around towards me, I’m fine with that because I know my own truth. I’m in an amazing relationship with a beautiful woman, and I’m totally comfortable with me, and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.

How long have you been together?

Two-and-a-half years. Her name is Renée [Puente], and she’s a singer/songwriter.

How did you meet?

We met at a Grammy party a little bit over two years ago. I was singing “Over the Rainbow” on my ukulele at Clive Davis’s party, and I met her at an after party. She was speaking to a friend of hers in pidgin, which is Hawaiian slang. I spent a lot of time in Hawaii; I used to sing backup for Don Ho.

What? You sang for Don Ho?!

Yeah, when I was in high school I used to go there in the summers and sing backup for him. It was my first job. I spent a lot of time in Hawaii and I heard her speaking, so I went up and started speaking it too, and we just instantly connected and it was great.

Okay, random question time. Let’s say you’re in front of an execution squad. In order to save your life, you can either sing or dance. Which would you do? You can only do one.

I would dance. My voice would probably be too shaky because I would be too nervous to sing and I’m a very physical person, especially when I perform. I can pull on my dance thing anytime, and I think it would be fine. I could start break-dancing. I could do any type of dance they want.

Okay, second and final random question. Let’s say you had all the money in the world and could stage any Broadway show you wanted and also star in it. What would it be?

They’re about to do a production of this in London, and it’s something I always felt would be such a great musical; Sam Mendes is directing it. It’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I would love to play Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder’s performance in that movie is so iconic, and I’m such a fan of his. The show has so much heart, the music is beautiful. It’s actually by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who wrote “Hairspray.” I think it’s such a clever idea. I’m so hoping it’s going to be great.

Where do see yourself in 10 years—personally? professionally?

I’d like to be married with at least one kid, maybe two. Professionally, I love what I’m doing now. I’ve had such a great, well-rounded career so far and I’ve gotten my hands in the theater world, the music world, television, film and honestly, I just want to keep doing what I’m doing. I’m so happy with this. I feel so fulfilled, because I get to do so many different things. I think if I were to do anything different, I would like to try directing for the theater.

Directing what?

Probably a musical because that’s kind of more my world. I’ve worked with some of the best directors, and I’ve learned so much from these guys. It was such a collaboration—that was the best part. We found a way to mesh our ideas together. I love that.

Ask the Glee star who his favorite performer is and he’ll quickly answer: Gene Kelly. Then he’ll talk about his love for Dino and Sammy and Frank. For him, there is no one better than the song and dance men of the past. But it’s 2013 and since Michael Bublè is currently ruling the charts with his throwback routine, it’s not easy for anyone else to go out and record a successful standards record.

Lucky for Morrison, he found a mutual old soul in Adam Levine, who gave him the go ahead to make the album he’s always wanted to make.

“I always thought of him as the pop rock guy but he has such an infinite for this kind of music I’m doing on this new album,” Morrison told Radio.com. “So much so that he was like, ‘We need to do an album of you and this music.’”

The Maroon 5 frontman signed Morrison to his label 222 Records and enlisted legendary producer Phil Ramone, who worked with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Barbra Streisand to Billy Joel before passing away earlier this year, to help the actor work on an album filled with standards and Broadway hits.

It wasn’t easy for Morrison to come up with a tracklist for his new release, Where It All Began. In the end he chose songs that fit his voice, many of which he had sang before including “Young In The Springtime” from South Pacific. The singer, who made his Broadway debut at the age of 19, also included “On The Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady, which is Morrison’s audition song. It even helped him land his role on Glee.

“This is just a little taste of home for me,” Morrison said. “These are the songs I love to sing. And these are classic well-worn songs sung by the greatest vocalists of all time.”

Thanks to Levine Morrison also got a chance to record in the Capitol Building out in Los Angeles in the legendary Frank Sinatra room. He even got a chance to sing into the same mic ol’ Blue Eyes used back in the day. “There was this feeling of nostalgia,” Morrison explained. “Some kind of otherworldly presence. It was pretty amazing.”

Morrison said he couldn’t ask for a better boss.

“[Levine’s] an artist himself,” Morrison explained. “He knows how an artist should be treated and he really just gave me free reign on this to do whatever I wanted from the very beginning.”

The singer even said Levine only came by the studio three times and was “beyond happy” about how it was turning out. Morrison was also beyond happy about working with Levine and his record label.

I feel like there’s a demand, and I feel like in 20 years from now there will be a demand.”

Morrison may be best known as “Glee’s” endlessly optimistic and well-meaning mentor Will Schuester, but the Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated star is returning to his first love, Broadway classics, on his just-released second solo album, “Where It All Began.” The album explores standards made famous on the Broadway stage, a place Morrison feels extremely comfortable.

“My love of Broadway began at a very young age,” Morrison says. “My mom used to listen to standards, to old Broadway show tunes and stuff. This is where my career began, this is where my love of music began, so I thought it would be very apropo to do this album.”

Producers Phil Ramone helmed production on the album, which also features a duet with Smokey Robinson on “Ease On Down The Road” from “The Wiz.”

“I met Smokey Robinson at an Elton John AIDS foundation event honoring Motown [in 2012],” recalls Morrison. “I got to talking with him that night, and we shared our love for music, especially this kind of music. We just kept in contact, the conversation kept going beyond that night, and he said he’d love to be on the album. And that was such a surreal experience — when someone like Smokey Robinson comes into the studio to be on your album. It’s one of those moments I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Robinson wasn’t the only megastar involved in Morrison’s work: “Where It All Began” is the first album released on 222 Records, the new imprint of Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. Morrison says that working with Levine was just like being on “The Voice,” but without the cameras.

“The great thing about Adam is that he’s actually very hands-off,” explains Morrison. “He knows how he wants to be treated as an artist, and so he treats his artists that way, giving them a sense of freedom and creativity. You don’t think of Adam as a lover of this music, but he loves the standards.”

While his “Glee” costars like Amber Riley, Naya Rivera and Darren Criss are all exploring solo careers, Morrison points out that the journey from “Glee” to recording artist is different from person to person.

“I think it’s a different experience for anyone,” says Morrison. “For this album, it’s very symphonic and orchestral, so I’m doing the Symphony Circuit of sorts. So I’m playing with the Boston Pops and the National Symphony Orchestra. I’m standing on a stage with 60 piece orchestras behind me. So it’s a much different experience than Naya and Amber will have. Darren’s very live, he’s playing his guitar, he’s been doing that his whole life. He’s a pro. Amber and Naya have been singing their whole lives — I think they’ll be just fine. For them it’s just finding the right music, and it’s been a process for them.”

For fans who can’t experience the live show in person, Morrison’s PBS special, “Matthew Morrison: Where It All Began - Live From the Bushnell,” debuts June 1st.

All you Gleeks are in for a treat: Today Matthew...

All you Gleeks are in for a treat: Today Matthew Morrison unleashes his new album, Where It All Began on Adam Levine’s 222 Records. Not only should you get this record because it features classics like “Singin’ In The Rain” and “It Don’t Mean A Thing,” but a portion of the proceeds go toward the Human Rights Campaign, the LGBT rights group Morrison is heavily involved with.

NewNowNext caught up with everyone’s favorite teacher to talk about the album, his activism and which celebs he’d like to see on Glee.
Actor and singer Matthew Morrison stopped by TODAY on Tuesday to perform songs from his new album ”Where It All Began,” and the “Glee” star’s garb matched his retro sound.

Did you like what Morrison was wearing? Here are the details:

Brooks Brothers “The Gatsby Collection” suit

Peal & Company “The Gatsby Collection” shoes made exclusively for Brooks Brothers

Morrison said his classic look was influenced by his taste for style that can withstand the test of time.

“I love the ’20s and ’30s but I think this even kind of transcends a couple more decades,” Morrison told TODAY.com. “This (outfit) was inspired by the movie (“The Great Gatsby”) and it’s all coming back, which is great.”
